Roman general who, following the death of Julius Caesar, formed a triumvirate along with Octavian and another Roman general and set themselves up as the three rulers of what was still a Republic; he and Octavian then ousted the third guy and eventually it broke down into a civil war between himself and Octavian; and because of his love affair with Cleopatra of the neighboring kingdom of Egypt, Octavian successfully branded him as a traitor to Rome, whereupon, he fled to Egypt to be with his lover Cleopatra and they both committed suicide together; then Octavian, unopposed, declared himself to be the 1st Emperor of Rome

Martin Niemöller

German theologian and Lutheran pastor who did not, at first oppose the Nazi party; once they rose to power in 1938, he began opposing them, for which he was imprisoned in a concentration camp and narrowly escaped execution; after the war, he expressed his deep regret that he did not speak up sooner; he wrote this poem called "First They Came" which reads: “First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Steven Soderbergh

American film-director, screenwriter and producer who is the youngest director, at age 26 to have won the highest prize at The Cannes Film festival for his debut independent film; he has since gone on to direct several Hollywood blockbusters including the "Ocean's Eleven" trilogy; he is known for his distinctive, avant-garde cinematography that he retains even in his Hollywood films; he won the Oscar for Best Director for his film "Traffic;" he is a vocal proponent of the preservation of artistic merit in the face of Hollywood corporatism; he claims he no longer reads reviews of his films and prefers not to have his name front and center at the start of a film nor to take possessory directing credit for the film in the film's titular marking, saying: "The fact that I'm not an identifiable brand is very freeing."
